Attendance Policy

The SLArts Governing Board adopted a new Attendance Policy in fall of 2026, alongside our “Be Here” campaign, which highlights why regular attendance matters for learning, connection and belonging. Here are the highlights of the new policy:

  • Please report absences within two school days, and include the reason.
  • If we don’t hear from you in that window, the absence may stay unexcused.
  • For multiple days out, let us know within two school days of the first day and keep us updated on how long your student will be gone.
  • We never require a medical note to excuse an illness.

Valid excuses include physical or mental illness, mental or behavioral health needs, a family death, approved school activities, absences permitted by an IEP or 504 plan, and other reasons allowed under Utah law.

Students are responsible for getting and completing missed assignments. SLArts will provide reasonable accommodations and at least three school days to make up work.

Students who arrive late must check in at the main office. Students leaving early must be checked out at the office by a parent, guardian, or authorized emergency contact. Chronic tardiness may lead to support from our Student Support Team.

Our approach is supportive first. After five unexcused absences or truancies, a student may be referred to the Student Support Team. Support can include attendance meetings, improvement plans, counseling, tutoring, mentoring, and connections to community resources. In some cases, a formal notice may be sent to families, as required by Utah law.

A student with 10 consecutive unexcused absences may be withdrawn after the school makes reasonable efforts to reach the family and sends written notice.

Families can appeal a notice, attendance determination, or withdrawal decision in writing within 10 business days. The Executive Director or designee (principal/CAO) reviews appeals, and a final appeal can go to the Governing Board.
